Why Nevada Covering Kids and Families?
Nevada Covering Kids and Families’ goal is to increase access to quality health care for women, infants, children and their families in Nevada by increasing the number of applications submitted for consideration of eligibility for participation in state or local public programs through enhanced outreach, education and public awareness.

The Campaign for Children’s Health Care reported that, approximately 18% of Nevada children are uninsured compared to 12% nationally. Thirty two per cent of Nevada’s uninsured populations are children under the age of 19.

Two publicly funded programs, Nevada Check Up and Nevada Medicaid, provide health insurance for low-income children and their families.  Neither public program, nor the Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) contracted to provide these insurance products conduct outreach or public education to increase applications submitted for consideration of eligibility.

What Have We Done?
Since 1999, CKF and statewide coalition members and partners have provided outreach and public education to assist families with Nevada Check Up and Medicaid applications. CKF increased the number of families who have access to well-care visits, pre-natal care, and prescriptions for illness, and other medical services.

According to the Division of Health Care Financing and Policy in Nevada, enrollment in Nevada Check Up is increasing at a rate greater than the national average (in 2004 11.57% increase compared with .6% nationally). CKF is responsible for initiating 18% – 20% of all applications received by Nevada Check Up and is committed to increase this by another 10% – 15% over the next two years with implementation of an AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer program.
