Culture & Tradition

You will find, that as a whole, the Indian culture remains resistant to assimilation. The Indian seeks peace and harmony with family, with friends, and with nature. Many believe this lifestyle is completely contrary to the non-Indian world of materialism, turmoil, and competitiveness. In addition, many tribal members treasure the right to be different, to retain their traditions, to be Indian.

The challenge is to adapt your skills to this way of life, one that may be in sharp contrast to your own. By reaching out and sharing your knowledge, you will also share in maintaining the well-being, inner peace and the preservation of a culture.

Gambling casinos promise quick riches.  From the Nevada/Oregon border south to the Sierra Nevada's, this is Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe Indian country. Colorful cow towns relive the Wild West. A prehistoric lake gives shelter to a world famous white pelican rookery.  The largest Service Unit is the Phoenix Area Indian Health Service.  It covers almost two-thirds of Nevada.

Indian Health Services

The Indian Health Service
www.ihs.gov

The Indian Health Service (IHS), and agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives.  The provision of health services to members of federally-recognized tribes grew out of the special government-to-government relationship between the federal government and Indian tribes. This relationship, established in 1787, is based on Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, and has been given form and substance by numerous treaties, laws, Supreme Court decisions, and Executive Orders. The IHS is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for Indian people, and its goal is to raise their health status to the highest possible level. The IHS currently provides health services to approximately 1.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives who belong to more than 557 federally recognized tribes in 35 states.
